Abstract

Background: The chronic optic neuropathy known as slowly developing primary open-angle glaucoma (P.O.A.G.) is typified by unique patterns for optic nerve degeneration as well as vision field loss. is the most prevalent kind, a complicated, multidimensional illness with a pathophysiology influenced by both genetic and environmental variables. Objective: This study's objective is to find the relation between polymorphism of the MCP-1 gene with open-angle glaucoma disease susceptibility along with their proposed role in disease pathogenesis. Materials and Methods: Two groups were the subjects of a case-control study: The first group included 40 patients who had previously been diagnosed with glaucoma, all cases that were observed in Al-Diwaniyah Teaching Hospital/Eye Department and private ophthalmology Al-Hayat clinics/Al-Qadisiyah/Iraq. In the period from October 2023 to December 2023, under the supervision of experienced ophthalmologist medicine specialists, information was collected about each case. From the patient, in addition to the tests that were performed in the center's departments, such as eye pressure and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The second group included 40 healthy volunteers (with no family history of glaucoma). Results: The current investigation showed the mean serum MCP-1 level in the patient group was noticeably higher than that of the control group, 3.63 ± 2.45 pg/ml opposing 1.51 ± 0.66 pg/ml, consequently (p<0.001). Additionally, current investigation found the genotypes AA, AG, and GG showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) whenever contrasts emerged among the patient group as well as the control group. Thus, none of them could consider this as a protection and hazardous element. Conclusion: Even so, this research found no significant association between the MCP-1 (2518A/G) polymorphism and the occurrence of primary open-angle glaucoma in a sample of Iraqi individuals. However, its serum level reflects a sign of involvement in pathogenesis and disease development.
